Resumen
HOLGADO, Daniel y MAYA JARIEGO, Isidro. Participation of latino women in clinical practice for prevention of breast cancer: A case of application of the communitary preparation model. Investig. desarro. [online]. 2010, vol.18, n.1, pp.114-141. ISSN 0121-3261.
This paper shows the role of community readiness to promote Latinas' participation in breast cancerprevention clinical trials. Lawsin et al's experience (2007) is used as a case study to illustrate the concept of community readiness, and is examined applying the Getting to Outcomes' framework. The case refers to two rural and two urban communities in Colorado (United States). Traditionally, the problems of participation of ethnic minorities in prevention programs have been explained through individualfactors. However, there are community factors such as social climate, leadership, social resources, knowledge and effort that may have a significant influence. Community readiness was assessed through interviews to leaders and key informants. A low level of community readiness was observed in the four communities. Through this case study we illustrate the model of community readiness levels (Oetting et al, 2001), and some recommendations for intervention are offered.
