VELASCO, Juan David. "THE VOTE FOR "URIBISMO" IN THE COLOMBIAN MUNICIPALITIES:PATTERNS AND MEANINGS, 2002-2014". anal.polit. [online]. 2017, vol.30, n.89, pp.3-37. ISSN 0121-4705. https://doi.org/10.15446/anpol.v30n89.66215.
In the last two decades, Alvaro Uribe Vélez was the right-wing president in Latin America which recorded the highest levels of social support. Thus, it is relevant to ask about the factors that explain the persistence of the vote for Uribe despite the various corruption scandals in which were involved their families and political allies. Thus, the paper rejects that agrarian structure and paramilitarism are consistent factors to explain the electoral results of this political force. Finally, the article demonstrate how the guerrilla’s repertoires of violence, the inclusion of merchants and rural elites in the offer of state security, and clientelism targeted to urban poors, were the key factor that allowed Alvaro Uribe to consolidate a polyclassist electorate in several regions of the country.
