TODD JEWELL, R; ROSSI, Máximo y TRIUNFO, Patricia. EL ESTADO DE SALUD DEL ADULTO MAYOR EN AMÉRICA LATINA. Cuad. Econ. [online]. 2007, vol.26, n.46, pp.147-167. ISSN 0121-4772.
This work analyses the state of health of people older than 60 in five Latin-American countries (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Mexico and Uruguay) by making use of the Health, Wellbeing and Aging Survey data. Ordered probit models were used for investigating socioeconomic variables’ effects on the self-reported state of health. The results indicated that selfperception of health was positively related to good nutrition, better education and an active life-style. Individuals who were satisfied with their current income probably reported better health. It was also found that the socioeconomic level enjoyed/suffered during initial stages of life influenced the state of self-reported health, thereby having important implications for public health policy. The relationship between socioeconomic variables and self-perception of health was consistent for the five countries.
