Resumen

SALAMANCA, Helwar Figueroa  y  ESPITIA, Julián David Corredor. “In a Grey and Silent City”: French Immigration in Bogotá (1900-1920). Anu.hist.reg.front. [online]. 2019, vol.24, n.2, pp.75-100.  Epub 31-Jul-2019. ISSN 0122-2066.  https://doi.org/10.18273/revanu.v24n2-2019003.

In spite of the small amount of French people that arrived to Colombia, it is possible to analyze the remarkable impact in Bogotá of these immigrant communities through their commercial activities and cultural influence. In order to understand that impact, we tracked down the French people that arrived to Bogotá during the early twentieth century and identify their occupations, material contributions and cultural influences on Bogotá´s daily life. Our analysis is based on census, passports, and letters from Colombia’s National Archive (AGN), as well as newspapers from the períod of study and the historíography about immigration in Colombia. The research demonstrates that the French community in Bogotá was the biggest immigrant community in Bogotá and that their activities focused on commerce, liberal professions and crafts.
