Resumen

ROSAS SALAS, Sergio. Between the Plan de Iguala and public opinion: printed matter and debates in the consummation of Independence (Puebla, Mexico, 1820-1821). Hist. Caribe [online]. 2023, vol.18, n.43, pp.325-350.  Epub 04-Ene-2024. ISSN 0122-8803.

This article aims at reconstructing and analyzing how printed materials and newspapers that were distributed in Puebla between March and September in 1821 supported Mexico's Independence. This was accomplished by acting in accordance with viewpoints expressed since the restoration of the Cadiz Charter in 1820. This paper argues that the public opinion of Puebla expressed a widespread support for the Plan de Iguala insofar as it guaranteed respect for religion and the possibility that Independence would allow the exercise of rights previously obtained (such as free press and free opinion) without affecting the position of the clergy and the army in the society.

Palabras clave : Catholic Church; Mexico; Independence; Puebla; public opinion.
