The purpose of this research was to identify some of the factors associated with intimate partner violence perpetrated during pregnancy. This is a cross-sectional study of 358 puerperae residing in the city of Maringa (Parana, Brazil), who were being served by the Unified Health System. The World Health Organization Violence against Women Instrument was used. An association analysis was performed using the Odds Ratio (OR). The prevalence of intimate partner physical violence during pregnancy was 7.5%, being higher among women who have had multiple pregnancies (89%; OR = 6.3; p < 0.001). A significant association was found between intimate partner physical violence during pregnancy and lack of religion (OR = 3.1; p = 0.008), smoking during pregnancy (OR = 2.7, p = 0.025) and having had a child with another partner (OR = 3.4; p = 0.011). As for the characteristics of the couple, there was an association with the male partner not having worked during the pregnancy (OR = 8.2; p <0.001) and with the use of illicit drugs (OR = 3.1, p = 0.031). Health professionals who provide prenatal care should investigate possible instances of physical violence during pregnancy, especially among women who have had multiple pregnancies, and offer extensive multidisciplinary care for the family, ranging from planning to psychosocial assistance.
