This is a qualitative study of an exploratory, descriptive and explanatory nature, with the Grounded Theory as a methodological framework.

Objective:

The purpose is to understand the different environments or contexts for the care of children and adolescent with diabetes mellitus (DM).

Materials and methods:

Interviews were conducted with 14 family members in Brazil and Spain during the period from March to December 2015. The data obtained from these interviews were analyzed through open, axial and selective coding.

Results:

It was found that the family supports the care of the child and the adolescent with DM, mainly in the home and school environment. The community and health services were also mentioned as contexts for care. Involvement with health services and the support they provide were highlighted. The health center, the basic units, the hospital and private services were cited as contexts were examinations and medical appointments with specialists are conducted, in addition to glycaemia control and regular examination of the feet. In general, children and adolescents are hospitalized in emergency situations.

Conclusions:

Guidance, support and continuous follow-up for the child or adolescent with DM in the different contexts where they find themselves are necessary to influence their lives and contribute to their health.
