Resumen

ESTRADA MONTOYA, John Harold. Assessment of youth educational programs, as a tool for HIV/AIDS prevention. Rev. Gerenc. Polit. Salud [online]. 2009, vol.8, n.16, pp.72-90. ISSN 1657-7027.

The large number of young adults (among 15 - 24 years old) living with HIV infection acquired through unprotected sex practices in Latin America stands out. Many of these young adults are vulnerable to HIV/AIDS infection due to their sexual behavior, the consumption of illegal substances, the lack of access to HIV information and health services and also due to economic and social reasons. Education programs in the field of sexual and reproductive health (considered successful) help delay the initiation of sexual activity and protect sexually active young adults against HIV and others sexually transmitted diseases and also prevent unwanted pregnancies. The education programs improve contextual factors that may stop the epidemic, increasing access to quality education, transforming the environmental inequality, valuing diversity and promoting principles of equality, democracy and respect for human rights.

Palabras clave : HIV/AIDS; prevention; education; young adults; evaluation; critical pedagogy; sex instruction for youth; health promotion; HIV (viruses) acquired immune deficiency syndrome; prevention and control.
