A biographical summary of Ivan Pavlov is presented, emphasizing his academic formation and achievements, and his contributions to general science and psychology. His main findings on associative learning are described and three areas of current development in this area are discussed: the study of behavioral mechanisms, the study of neurobiological mechanisms and the functional role of learning.
