Resumen

CASTILLO GARCIA, José Rubén. La formación de ciudadanos en la escuela: un escenario posible. Rev.latinoam.cienc.soc.niñez juv [online]. 2003, vol.1, n.2, pp.115-143. ISSN 1692-715X.

This article discusses two issues: in the first place, it states some of the challenges faced by Colombia as regards youth; in the second place, the author argues that the way in which society looks on the concept of citizenship has implications in school life issues. It is considered that one of the challenges the country faces with reference to youth is to promote the vision of school as a socializing environment, academic efforts might be directed towards the education of thoughtful critical deliberating and creative citizens. The discussion of the concept of citizenship seeks to present it as related to a wide variety of processes and issues, such as its historical development, its relationship to social and communal life, its legal implications, its effects on rights and duties and on social equity, and the different ways in which citizens participate. Finally, the author discusses ways in which school can promote the understanding and the exercise of responsible citizenship.

Palabras clave : Citizenship; School; Education; Citizen's rights and duties.
