Resumen
ZARZA DELGADO, Martha Patricia. Mexican male and female college students and the symbolic body as gender construction. Rev.latinoam.cienc.soc.niñez juv [online]. 2009, vol.7, n.2, suppl.1, pp.1349-1377. ISSN 1692-715X.
The aim of this research is to study the gender messages transmitted from body aesthetics, its adornment and its movements in the juvenile college population in the city of Toluca, Mexico. From in-depth interviews and participant observation, the body is identified as a symbolic means through which both male and female youths participating in this study show certain power relationships between feminine and masculine. These relations are distinct depending on the juvenile style they adhere to. Accordingly, there are multiple and varied stands that sometimes seem to accept and sometimes to challenge the gender that controls them.
Palabras clave : youth; gender; symbolic body; juvenile identities.
