The impact factor (IF) is a bibliometric indicator used in the evaluation of the impact and visibility of the investigations disseminated by scientific journals. However, several scholars have pointed to criticisms and limitations regarding their use. This paper aims to compare the IF of the journals of Latin America, in the area of Social Sciences, simultaneously present in the Scopus and Web of Science databases. The results showed that 71% of the journals presented the IFs calculated from Scopus above those obtained from the Web of Science. Pearson’s linear correlation of 0.43 with a positive tendency was verified and the Wilcoxon test was applied, demonstrating statistically significant differences between the IFs (5% significance level was used). The study showed the difficulties of comparing IF and international visibility in mainstream science.
