Abstract Maya Deren (1917-1961) was a filmmaker of the mid-twentieth century came to be considered the "mother" of experimental and avant-garde cinema of the United States, thanks to films likeMeshes ofthe Afternoon (1943), At Land (1944), Ritual in Transfigured Time (1946). Between 1947 and 1954, this artist made four trips to Haiti that allowed her to enter the knowledge of the voodoo religion, resulting in different works. First, a book about the Haitian religion entitled Divine Horsemen: The Living Gods of Haiti, published in 1953, and, secondly, a film material almost 9 hours, while Deren never released in life, left to light in 1981 like documentary. This paper examines some of the representations and interpretations about voodoo built by this pioneering film-maker.
