Resumen

MORAGA VALLE, FABIO  y  PENALOZA PALMA, CARLA. Spain in the Heart of Chileans: The Alliance of Intellectuals and the Journal Aurora de Chile, 1937-1939. Anu. colomb. hist. soc. cult. [online]. 2011, vol.38, n.2, pp.55-81. ISSN 0120-2456.

The article analyzes the solidarity of Chilean society with Republican Spain during the Spanish Civil War, fundamentally expressed through the work of Chilean intellectuals. The hypothesis set forth is that, despite the existence of leftist parties of growing importance and a tradition of solidarity with processes such as the Russian and Mexican Revolutions, concern for the Spanish Republic was not automatic. On the contrary, that support had to overcome significant obstacles before its consolidation with the publication of the journal Aurora de Chile (1938-1940), thanks to the political activism of intellectual groups organized under the leadership of poet Pablo Neruda. The objective of the article is to analyze the emergence of that leadership, the stages of its development, and the resistance encountered by pro-Republican propaganda before becoming part of the Chilean political culture of the time.

Palabras clave : cultural journals; intellectuals; Pablo Neruda; Republican Spain.
