Resumen

ROJAS, Diana Marcela. VISIBLE AND INVISIBLE WALLS. MIGRATION IN RELATIONS BETWEEN THE UNITED STATES AND LATIN AMERICA. anal.polit. [online]. 2020, vol.33, n.100, pp.167-187.  Epub 05-Abr-2021. ISSN 0121-4705.  https://doi.org/10.15446/anpol.v33n100.93365.

Migration has been a central issue in US relations with Latin America. Over the last two decades, migratory flows to the north have been transformed, quantitatively and qualitatively, giving rise to a complex and differentiated phenomenon. The hardening of the Donald Trump administration’s policy in this field made it even more difficult to respond to the challenges that migration poses both for the domestic politics of the United States and some Latin American countries, as well as for interregional ties. The article analyzes the position of that administration in the light of what we call the “wall policy”, composed of physical and external walls, and symbolic and internal walls. To do this, an overview of Latin American migration to the United States is presented, the main decisions of the Trump government are examined, and their impact on hemispheric relations is established.
