ALONQUEO BOUDON, Paula. Linguistics Distinction and Categorization of Objects: The Influence Ser/Estar Verbs in Children and Adults Spanish Speakers. Divers.: Perspect. Psicol. [online]. 2013, vol.9, n.2, pp.383-396. ISSN 1794-9998.
The Spanish Ser/Estar distinction plays a central role in the comprehension of permanent and temporary properties of entities. Semantic information about the conceptual status of these properties is essential for cognitive processes such as categorization. In the present study, we pretended to determine if ser/estar verbal forms affect object categorization in Chilean Spanish speaking. One hundred and sixty participants (ages 5 to 22) were distributed in two experimental conditions to perform an object categorization task. Results showed important developmental differences because only adults and older children, but not young children, used the semantic information conveyed in ser/estar distinction to categorize objects.
