ARISTIZABAL, EDIER  y  YOKOTA, SHUICHIRO. GEOMORPHOLOGY APPLIED TO LANDSLIDE OCCURRENCE IN THE ABURRÁ VALLEY. Dyna rev.fac.nac.minas [online]. 2006, vol.73, n.149, pp.5-16. ISSN 0012-7353.

Geomorphological considerations are essential in landslide occurrence analysis, and thus terrain attributes and modelling processes occurring over the surfaces need to be understood. Slope processes are an integral part of dynamic geomorphology; they are part of the variables controlling long-term landscape evolution. In recent years, growing population and expansion of settlements over hazardous areas have greatly increased the impact of natural disasters, especially in developing countries such as Colombia, and locally the Aburrá Valley, which is classified as one of the areas most affected by landslides in Colombia. The high rate urbanization and the morphology of the valley, have forced many people to live on landslide-prone slopes. The ancient and recent history of the Aburrá Valley has been characterized by occurrence of numerous landslides, which have caused great economic losses and casualties. Consequently, numerous studies about landslide occurrence in the Aburrá Valley have been carried out. Some of them have reported the need of studies concerning the understanding of slope dynamic and its relationship to landslide occurrence. Long-term landscape evolution offers the best explanation of the relative sensitivities of landscape elements to anthropogenic intervention. Accordingly, it is very important to identify not only the hazard created or accentuated by encroaching urban sprawl, but also that connected to geomorphological and geological conditions associated with its location. The objective of this paper is focused on the link between landscape evolution and landslide occurrence in the Aburrá Valley, and discuss a geomorphological framework that will permit accurate assessment of landslide susceptibility and hazard.

Palabras clave : Geomorphology; landslides; Aburrá Valley; landscape evolution.
