Resumen

DIAZ-YAMAL, Ivonne  y  MUNEVAR-VEGA, Liliana. Phytoestrogens: a topic review. Rev Colomb Obstet Ginecol [online]. 2009, vol.60, n.3, pp.274-280. ISSN 0034-7434.

Introduction: phytoestrogens are substances which are found in many plants. They have recently been proposed for managing menopause-associated disorders. Objective: understanding these compounds’ biochemistry and pharmacodynamics and finding data regarding their use in everyday clinical practice. Methodology: articles in the following databases were reviewed: PubMed, Ovid, MDconsult, ProQuest and ScienceDirect. Results: Five randomised, controlled clinical studies were found and 6 articles describing case series. The clinical studies dealt with a reduced number of patients, the same as the case series. Only two meta-analyses were found; these compared phytoestrogens being used for hot flushes; however, their effectiveness was similar to that of the placebo in these studies and no evidence was shown as regards their effectiveness concerning other perimenopausal symptoms. Some studies have evaluated phytoestrogens regarding endometrial and breast safety without finding major risks concerning their use, so far. Conclusion: no evidence was found concerning phytoestrogen use in clinical practice, others treatments are more effective. Further studies should be carried out to demonstrate these compounds’ effectiveness regarding perimenopausal symptoms

Palabras clave : phytoestrogens; menopause.
