ABSTRACT Pruritus is one of the most frequent symptoms referred in consults to the dermatologist. It is a subjective and nonspecific symptom that occurs as a result of a large number of diseases, both cutaneous and systemic. Despite being a protective mechanism, it is sometimes so intense that it can affect the quality of life of the patients. In this review we describe the complex neurophysiological bases of pruritus and the principal diseases that are associated with it
