Introduction:

Preoperative anemia in cardiovascular surgery is increasing globally. It has a strong association with blood transfusion and increased morbidity and mortality. In Colombia, there are no studies that show this problem despite the importance of prognosis and postoperative outcome.

Objective:

To determine the prevalence of anemia prior to scheduled cardiovascular surgery, the number of postoperative blood transfusions of globular concentrate performed and its association with anemia at the “Institución Prestadora de Salud (IPS) Clínica San Rafael” of Pereira between June 2015 and June 2016.

Method:

Cross-sectional descriptive study. A population of 129 patients undergoing scheduled cardiovascular surgery was selected. Data analysis was performed using Microsoft Excel 2013 and Stata 14 software.

Results:

A prevalence of anemia prior to scheduled cardiovascular surgery was obtained of 39.5 %. Among the anemic patients, 58.8 % of the patients were transfused. An association was found between anemia and blood transfusion CI: 95 %: 0.17-0.82.

Conclusion:

These results must carry out the implementation of strategies for the proper management of preoperative anemia in these patients.
