The arricie presents the special dossier on the history of Communications media and journalism in Colombia in relation to the fiftieth anniversary of the inauguration of televisión in Colombia on June 13th, 2004. Knowing that historie research on the médium of televisión in our country is presently ver}' precarious although stimulated by the celebration of its first half century of existence, the dossier seeks to contribute to constructing a broader field of research on the history of social Communications and journalism in Colombia. Likewise, to emphasize that communication studies are not limited to the media, but extend far beyond them, to the consideration of a series of processes relating to historie developments of culture and education that affect and condition Communications. Based on analysis of the contents of each of the works included here, the presentation becomes a propitious place to point out the issues and problems that a social history of Communications and journalism would involve, to cali attention to certain central points for reflection and some possible topics for studying the history of social Communications media and journalism, and the need for convergence of historie research and social communication, resulting in expansión and enrichment through the use of a combínation written documentary sources, along with oral, iconographic, audiovisual and digital sources needed to explain the history of the representation of politics and of the cultural representation of society.
