This essay is an approach to the problem of identity in Mario de Andrade's novel Macunaima. The topic will be addressed from the work of Fernando Ortiz and Leopoldo Zea, in order to examine this Brazilian writer's proposal, configured in three characters that play an essential role in the novel: Macunaima, Vencesalao Pietro Pietra and the Icamiabas. In this way, different fragments of the novel are analyzed in order to demonstrate the desire to recognize and reaffirm the identity of Brazilian man.
