NASCIMENTO, Vagner Ferreira do et al. Opinions of the elderly about the anti-covid vaccine and possible refusal. pers.bioét. [online]. 2023, vol.27, n.1, e2714.  Epub 28-Mar-2023. ISSN 0123-3122.  https://doi.org/10.5294/pebi.2023.27.1.4.

Objective:

To know the opinions of the elderly about the anti-COVID vaccine and possible refusal.

Method:

This exploratory qualitative study was conducted in a small municipality in the extreme north of Mato Grosso, Brazil. Data collection took place in March 2021 through a semi-structured interview. For data analysis, the ATLAS.ti® software was used.

Results:

Most seniors showed acceptance and desire to be immunized, but those with a low level of education showed more rejection of the vaccine, which was perceived by the other seniors as irresponsible. Participants mention that everyone has the right to choose.

Conclusions:

Although the elderly had a favorable opinion about the vaccine, educational actions, especially among those with a lack of education, should be intensified so that the behavior of refusal, if prevailing even after dialogues and clarifications, does not influence third parties and endanger community health.
