DE OLIVEIRA NEVES, Fábio  e  MENDONCA, Francisco. For a geographical cultural reading of solid waste: reflections to the geography debate. Cuad. Geogr. Rev. Colomb. Geogr. [online]. 2016, vol.25, n.1, pp.153-169. ISSN 0121-215X.  https://doi.org/10.15446/rcdg.v25n1.43025.

The topic regarding the residuals of daily activities is broad and by nature controversial and complex. Nevertheless, this discussion frequently is reduced to the economic-instrumental rationality of the experts. This article presents a geographical-cultural focus on the theme of residuals based on the 'imaginary' over waste products and space. The research offers a theoretical framework for the understanding of the practices of residual management: the confrontation between the principle of recuperation and that of relegation. While the urgency to recuperate the residuals seems to be a consensus in contemporary society, the principle of relegation continues to be present in many contexts. The contest between these two principles does not merely open up possibilities for overcoming the technical and economic discussion, but additionally, allows delving further into cultural and spacial aspects that are fundamental for the geography debate.

Palavras-chave : water disposal; management; recuperation principle; relegation principle; solid residue.
