WERTHEIMER, Marina. A Reading of the Conflicts over the Use of Coastal Space in Vicente López on the basis of the New Pragmatic-Pragmatist Sociologies. Cuad. Geogr. Rev. Colomb. Geogr. [online]. 2019, vol.28, n.2, pp.408-422. ISSN 0121-215X.  https://doi.org/10.15446/rcdg.v28n2.73458.

The article analyzes the environmental conflicts involved in the urban restructuring processes begun in 2004 on the coast of Vicente López, in the Metropolitan Area of Buenos Aires, Argentina. Its objective is to analyze the justification principles employed by the different actors to either defend their urban restructuring projects or question and challenge the processes of production of "unjust geographies" (Soja 2016), on the basis of the theoretical toolkit provided by pragmatic-pragmatist sociologies. This approach makes it possible to follow the actors "in situation" and account for the argumentative dimension of the public protest. The information was gathered from a review of the bibliography and in-depth interviews carried out in the context of an ongoing doctoral research. As a result, we hold that the coalition of private enterprises and different sectors of public power base their "moral arguments" on environmental claims in order to justify the modifications to the coastal urban profile. These findings aim to contribute to the debate over spatial justices and injustices, by understanding how environmental conflicts operate, from a discursive dimension, in contexts such as the one analyzed, in which green spaces increasingly constitute an "added value" for the city's neoliberal production.

Highlights: Reflection article on the justification principles employed in environmental conflicts deriving from the urban restructuring processes in begun in 2004 in a coastal space of Buenos Aires. On the basis of pragmatic-pragmatist sociologies, it affirms that urban management of coastal spaces legitimizes its actions using the postulates of environmental claims.
