In Latin American cities, the provision of potable water and sanitation has met obstacles in reaching universal coverage. This article analyzes the geographic resonances, i.e., the effects on the territory of the policies aimed at expanding water and sewage services in the metropolitan area of Buenos Aires, Argentina. The work was carried out with statistical and spatial analysis of census data provided by the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INDEC, Argentina), considering variables such as the level of coverage of water and sewage services, population distribution and growth, and socioeconomic level. The research showed that despite the sector initiatives of recent years, the form of expansion of coverage continues to reproduce socio-spatial inequalities in the distribution of the service, fostering an encompassing expansion in the city, while maintaining a lag in sewage with respect to water provision. This inertial component of the centralized model of expansion is limited by the metropolitan dynamics, which favors the districts lacking urban services, located farthest from the center. This work served to draw attention to the metropolitan issue which transcends, but also affects and determines, the management of the water and sewage networks in cities.
