JOHN SCHEID, Neusa Maria. The challenges of teaching natural sciences in the twenty-first. Rev. Fac. Cienc. Tecnol. [online]. 2016, n.40, pp.277-309. ISSN 0121-3814.

Science education has become crucial in this century to understand the phenomenon of the natural world and make political and social decisions that help citizens live a democratic experience and get human dignity. The literature found at least four arguments in favor of the teaching of natural sciences in early childhood: utility, economy, democratic and cultural aspects. This article aims to explain the plot, which emerged from the tessitura between the purposes of science education and the skills required in this context for teaching natural science in the twenty-first century. Taking as reference the theoretical researchers in the field of education, it shows the conditions necessary to be a competent professional in this area of knowledge. The text states that to achieve the aims of education presented in scientific literature, it is necessary that the competent teacher overcomes challenges in their professional practice, on three interconnected aspects: i) training in Epistemology and History of Science; ii) Participation in collective activities for the production of knowledge; iii) integration of information and communication technologies as tools for the development of research-based science education. The challenges of teaching for proper science education in the twenty-first century are complex and have implications in vocational training. To comply with expectations of preservice teachers and ensure continuous training to obtain adequate scientific education, it is necessary to revise the current standards of teachers' education. However, it is emphasized that this is not the only aspect in relation to the quality of science education. It is not enough to have only well qualified teachers, many other causes contribute, so there is a concern about the quality of education in general and particularly science education. However, this is the role of training organizations as partly responsible for teachers' education in this area. It is advisable to reevaluate the curriculum, teaching practices, times and spaces of the school and college, because without doubt this will help institutions provide dynamism and teaching skills in this field.
