MUNOZ-SOLARTE, DIANA MILENA  e  ANTE, LICETH ALEJANDRA. STANDARDIZATION OF AN in vitro PROTOCOL FOR THE BIOLOGICAL CONTROL OF Eichhornia crassipes WITH Neochetina (Coleoptera: Curculionidae). Rev.Bio.Agro [online]. 2017, vol.15, n.spe, pp.40-48. ISSN 1692-3561.  https://doi.org/10.18684/BSAA(EdiciónEspecial)40-48.

Aquatic weeds represent a major problem in water bodies, biological control with Neoquetinos is an alternative for their eradication. This study shows the standardization of an in vitro protocol for the biological control of Eichhornia crassipes (water buchon) with Neochetina bruchi and Neochetina eichhorniae, under conditions of temperature (24 and 26°C), humidity, ventilation, lighting and time. The experiment was carried out in plastic vessels to facilitate the mating of the species. Twenty pairs of insects of the genus Neochetina were distributed evenly in the vessels, each vessel with 15g (three parts of 5g leaf); Feed marks were counted every eight days throughout the life cycle (11 weeks in vitro). The results show efficient feeding in the organisms of both species with respect to the time. N. bruchi showed greater efficiency in the biological control during the experimental stage, with a higher statistical significance (p <0.05) from 48 days in feed, compared to N. eichhorniae. Considering the biological cycle it was possible to establish development times per phase in vitro for each species. The N. bruchi species was more efficient in adapting and generating food marks than N. eichhorniae with a p <0.05 in vitro.
