The official documents of almost all institutions of higher education in Colombia state a firm commitment with the teaching for analysis, critical thinking and problem-solving abilities (what we shall call the essential commitment of higher education). In this paper, the thesis is held that in the vast majority of regional colleges and universities the achievements related to such plea are scarce. We analyze the essential commitment and examine the reasons that prevent its realization. We also give some recommendations that could contribute to realize the essential commitment in this field.
