Introduction: Background Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) causes a significant impact on quality of life of patients; valuation is necessary for appropriate clinical and social approach. Objective: To validate the Spanish version of the St. George's Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ) in patients with COPD, adapted to Castilian spoken in Ecuador. Materials and Methods: The SGRQ adapted was applied to 80 COPD patients. The data were compared with spirometric values, stage of the disease according to the rules of the Consensus of Ecuador, Scale Hospital Anxiety and Depression and the March to 6 minutes. Results: A good correlation between the domains of the questionnaire and the summation index it was obtained (rho: Symptoms = 0.86; Activity = 0.94 e Impact = 0.97). Convergent validity was significantly adapted both when compared with the Forced Expiratory Volume in the first second (rho = -0.85) and with the March (rho = -0.75). For anxiety, rho = 0.44 and 0.58 for depression was obtained. The validity of known groups, showed a significant correlation between the questionnaire and stage of disease (p <0.001). Discussion and Conclusions: An adequate reliability and convergent validity of the SGRQ adapted to Castilian spoken in Ecuador was demonstrated. The results provide evidence to applying the questionnaire in the assessment of quality of life in patients with COPD.
