Health management, policies and system research is a national and international priority especially within the context of health sector reform. Objective: to identify studies on these topics carried out from 1994 on by research groups recognized by Colciencias in order to provide an overview about them. Methods: from GrupLac and CvLac databases of Colciencies (2004) all research groups with studies related to health management, policies and system were identified and all the studies performed by them were taken according to our objective, level involved (local, regional or national) and methodological approach. Finally studies were grouped accor- Investigative production of Colombian research groups recognized by Colciencias in matters of health management, policies and systems between 1994 and 2004 ding to topics. Results: 27 research groups were identified and 292 studies registered by them, from which 158 were empirical studies. Only 97 were analyzed as 61 were taken out because they did not have all required information. Findings suggest a limited development in research of health management, policies and system in Colombia. Therefore strengthening policies and mechanisms to encourage research in these fields are required.
