Objective: Evaluate clinical competences in medical semiology through the use of educational audiovisual material on medical school students from Universidad del Norte in 2006. Materials and Methods: Descriptive comparative study with primary database. To measure the gathering of abilities and clinical competence in semiology students, 13 students were randomly chosen, 6 received educational material and 7 did not receive it, the same abilities were measured between the two groups. Results: The study showed that 54% of the students that did not have the educational material as a tool did not use different semiological methods to explore the signs found on the patient, while 8% of the students that had the educational material did not do it. As of the students that did not have the material: 54% did not explain the patient what he/she was going to do, 8% did not follow the semiological phases of the physical exam; 48% of the group that had the educational material did follow it. It was found that 8% of the student without the educational material do not say good bye to the patient at the end of the physical exam. Conclusions: The group that used the educational material had a better aproach to the patients in the medical record "anamnesis", the outcome in the physical exam with the assigned patient was higher, they were more resourceful in finding clinical signs related to the patient's symptoms, they gave better instructions to the patients, had a better vocabulary and writing skills while expressing the clinical findings in the medical record.
