BAUTISTA-PARADA, Ileana Rocío; ROJAS-ESPINOSA, Ángel; SANCHEZ-GIL, Andrés e ANGEL-PINZON, Alberto. Delayed Esophageal Perforation after Anterior Cervical Spine Fixation: Case Report and Literature Review. Rev. colomb. Gastroenterol. [online]. 2024, vol.39, n.1, pp.81-84. Epub 16-Maio-2024. The anterior approach to cervical spine surgery can cause esophageal injuries; however, it is an infrequent complication with a 0.02-0.25% prevalence. It usually appears in two high-risk areas: Killian’s dehiscence and the thyrohyoid membrane. Delayed esophageal perforations typically occur due to chronic friction and usually have a benign course. Most cases of late migration occur in the first 18 months of the surgical procedure, and the clinical manifestation varies between asymptomatic patients in the case of delayed perforations and patients with dysphagia, subcutaneous emphysema, and sepsis in the case of acute perforations.
