GARCIA LOPEZ, ANTONIO JOSÉ. ANAL INCONTINENCE. Iatreia [online]. 2002, vol.15, n.3, pp.190-199. ISSN 0121-0793.

ANAL CONTINENCE is produced by the complex association of different anatomic and physiologic factors; as a consequence, inability to voluntarily control the emission of feces, liquids, and gases - anal incontinence - is due to a wide variety of diseases. Anal incontinence is recognized as a frequent disorder; usually it starts after delivery and progresses with age; it is more common in multiparous women and after 65 years of age. An effective treatment of anal incontinence should be based on the knowledge of its prevalence, incidence, physiopathology and predisposing factors; also on a correct diagnosis and proper utilization of diagnostic aids.
