GIRALDO-OSPINA, Tania  e  VASQUEZ-VARELA, Luis R.. Indicators of Coverage and Accessibility of Public Space in Manizales, Colombia. Cuad. Geogr. Rev. Colomb. Geogr. [online]. 2021, vol.30, n.1, pp.158-177.  Epub 02-Mar-2021. ISSN 0121-215X.  https://doi.org/10.15446/rcdg.v30n1.84320.

The amount of urban public spaces has been valued according to international standards set up as goals for cities. In the Colombian context, research on quality indicators of public space at the neighborhood level is not common for reasons including the lack of detailed data. This article presents a quantitative assessment of public space based on an intra-urban spatial analysis using a geographic information system according to four variables: public spaces, green areas, urban trees, and inhabitants. The fulfillment of indicators is hindered when public land use does not use urban management instruments to provide, order, design, build, and support public spaces. Likewise, its management is difficult when planning does not correspond to the population distribution and the new densities according to changes in the parameters of occupation and use, land use, or increase of inhabitants, even when there are new users, needs, and activities in the public space. Consequently, the planning processes undertaken cannot overcome the deficit of public spaces or improve the quality of urban life, and environmental inequalities persist in neighborhoods with minimal or no coverage.

Highlights: the authors present a research article that supplies a quantitative assessment of public space based on an intra-urban spatial analysis according to coverage and accessibility indicators.
