The present reflective article proposes the agency capability as a point of encounterand articulation between the human capabilities approach in education and the formation of environmental citizenship. It is part of the analysis process of a doctoral research thesis that problematizes the widely documented deficit paradigm on education in rural school contexts, and the dominant vision of development and progress. In this perspective, the text develops the meaning of agency capability and the importance of its inclusion for the analysis of a rural school context and the processes of environmental citizenship formation, both to address the problem of social inequality and the environmental crisis. As a result of the reflection, opportunities are proposed for the construction of agency capability in individuals through the creation of scenarios for dialogue of knowledge, training in knowledge about action, the resignification of the context and the openness to global environmental problems, mediated by the implementation of participatory and democratic processes in the classroom.
