UPRIMNY ANEZ, Simón. THE OLD WAR OF THE YOUNG. IS THE DEMOGRAPHIC DIVIDEND A CAUSE OF THE CONFLICT IN COLOMBIA?. anal.polit. [online]. 2023, vol.36, n.107, pp.196-223.  Epub 18-Fev-2024. ISSN 0121-4705.  https://doi.org/10.15446/anpol.v36n107.112556.

In the demographic theory of conflict, the composition of a population can be a source of violence. In Colombia, this approach has been little explored even though the conflict intensified during the 1990s, and, at the same time, the country entered a period of demographic dividend (very large young and working-age populations). To determine if this population structure influenced the evolution of conflict, municipalities from four different regions were chosen and some variables of population, conflict and socioeconomic conditions between 1973 and 2005 were analyzed. No automatic relationship was found between large young population and conflict, but all of the most violent municipalities had large young and working-age populations and poor living conditions, which invites us to continue investigating the relationship between demographic dividend and conflict.

Palavras-chave : armed conflict in Colombia; demographic dividend; demographic transition; sources of conflict; youth and conflict.
