CAMACHO-ROZO, Claudia Patricia. Consequences of Trading of Trachemys Scripta Elegans (Wied 1838) (Quelonia: Emydidae) in Venezuela. Ciencia en Desarrollo [online]. 2013, vol.4, n.2, pp.33-38. ISSN 0121-7488.

There is a limited knowledge in Venezuela about the impact tha exotic fauna has on native populations, as well as few strategies and control measures in the introduction, handling and tenure of these species. The Caracas Terrarium, following the guidelines set out in the National Strategy for the Conservation of Biodiversity of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, has been engaged in collecting specimen of Trachemys scripta elegans, that have been held as exotic pets in some homes of Caracas. Indeed, this Terrarium receives weekly four turtles on average, due mainly to the rapid growth of the species, the desire for improvement of those animals living conditions and the impossibility of tenure. Therefore the Terrarium has been giving educational lectures to the public for awareness on the acquisition and holding of exotic turtle T. scripta elegans, and on ecological problems brought by the species to the environment, in order to avoid the purchase and release of the red-eared slider in parks, rivers and streams and to motivate the community to donate the captive turtles to the Terrarium, for, in this way, be able to handle and monitor this exotic species in Venezuela
