EUGENIA CHAVES, María. "We, the slaves from Medellín" The polysemy of Freedom and the subordinate voices in the first republic of Antioquia. Nómadas [online]. 2010, n.33, pp.43-55. ISSN 0121-7550.

The Antioquia State Constitution sanctioned in 1812 declared the natural human rights to equality, liberty, and property. A group of slaves understood that the offering of liberty had also to do with them so they claimed for an explanation to the constitutional government. This article tackles the conflict produced between a revolutionary rhetoric and the slavery’s strategies. It examines some different people’s discourses from that period and points out that the speeches and the political freedom practice in the new republic is rooted in such a conflict.
