It is the aim of this paper to examine whether the concept of Roman Germanic legal family, or the different classifications that are made from Western states where there is significant influence of Roman law and liberal codifications of the nineteenth century, and where the law is used main source of law, is adequate to explain the Western law in the XXI century. By showing how the assumptions on which they built the concept have been important changes in recent years, or been the subject of further studies have reached conclusions different from those traditionally held, the article will conclude that the notion of family law is not useful in the present.
