LEON-DIAZ, Ruby Esther. Racial Issues and Social Work: Radical Absence and Selective Presences in the Trajectory of the Discipline in Brazil. Prospectiva [online]. 2022, n.34, pp.85-109.  Epub 01-Jul-2022. ISSN 0122-1213.  https://doi.org/10.25100/prts.v0i34.11990.

Analyzing the production of an area of knowledge is possible by observing the styles of thought and groupings. This exercise consists of recognizing that in addition to the influence of the context in which the production of science is situated, there are internal dynamics that influence the study of certain issues within scientific disciplines. The objective of the article is to present how the struggle between styles of thought in Brazilian Social Work influences the insertion of studies on racial issues or "race" in the discipline. The basis of the analysis is an intensive bibliographical research of historical and contemporary material produced in the academic field of Social Work in the period 1936-2013. The research showed that the slow dynamism of the study of racial issues in Brazilian Social Work has to do, on the one hand, with the current preponderance of a style of thought that prioritizes the Eurocentric study of reality based on a category of oppression. On the other hand, in the development and hegemony of this style, a discourse of radical absence has been created that ends up erasing all previous studies on racial issues from the academic history of Brazilian Social Work for being part of a different style of thought. However, there is a movement from below that, although it declares itself as a follower of the discourse of hegemony, is responsible for the authorship of racial issues in contemporary Brazilian Social Work.

Palavras-chave : Racial question; Radical absence; Styles of thought; Brazilian Social Work.
