JARAMILLO ZAPATA, Margarita et al. DETECTION OF VIRUSES AMV, CMV AND PLRV IN TAMARILLO (SOLANUM BETACEUM CAV.) ORCHARDS IN ANTIOQUIA, COLOMBIA. Rev. Fac. Nac. Agron. Medellín [online]. 2011, vol.64, n.1, pp.5831-5844. ISSN 0304-2847.

Tamarillo is one of the main fruit crops in the Colombian andean region. However, during the past years, there has been a drastic reduction in the total crop area due to the detrimental effect of a disease known as Virosis. In spite of the economic impact of this disease, there is little knowledge about the taxonomical identity of its associated viruses; therefore, no information is available for the design of appropriate control strategies. In this work, was evaluated the presence and incidence levels of AMV, CMV and PLRV viruses in tamarillo crops in the department of Antioquia by ELISA, RT-PCR and DNA sequencing of the viral capsid. Even though serological tests detected the presence of all three viruses, DNA sequencing could only confirm the presence of PRLV. The failure to detect AMV and CMV at the DNA level suggests differences in the target sequences used for primer design. CMV and PLRV were detected in 57 and 41% of all the analysed samples in contrast to AMV whose incidence level was only 2%. These findings confirm the presence of viral complex associated to the Virosis disease of tamarillo orchards in the mentioned territory.

Palavras-chave : ELISA; RT-PCR; sequencing; RNA viruses.
