This work is characterized by being an article of scientific research that aims to identify the main types used to refer to the organizations of civil society and discuss its use in academia. At first, were identified through literature review, such expressions (in Portuguese and English). In sequence, we selected six most mentioned terms and statistically quantified using each one in an electronic database, between 1990 and 2012. Finally, we discuss the existence or absence of trend in standardization of terms, based on the data found. The results showed that the types most commonly used in Portuguese were: non-governmental organizations and the third sector and in English non profit organizations, non governmental organization and third sector. Both the international literature, and national, there are a multitude of terms that coexist with each other.
