This research presents the review of the literature on the concept of informal economy, as well as contributions made by authors who have made theoretical criticisms referring to said concept. In this review the different contributions that have been made from 1970- 2015. Additionally, it provides a section referring to the informal work of women. The importance of all the above is limited to the need to know the academic contributions related to the aforementioned topics, in order to provide useful theoretical guidelines in research work concerning the informal labor market in Colombia and Latin America.
