LOPERA TELLEZ, Juan Carlos. The Regional Security and the Role of Weak States. A Theoretical Approach. Rev. Cient. Gen. José María Córdova [online]. 2012, vol.10, n.10, pp.175-186. ISSN 1900-6586.
This paper presents an overview of major trends in theoretical studies on regional security. To this end, the work begins with an approach to old regionalism, characterized by a bipolar world. Then, we present an overview of the new regionalism, taking as reference frame Organski 's power transition theory (Organski 1958; Organski, Kugler & Fox, 1980) and neo-functionalism of Haas (1964; 1990), In order to complete the analysis with the Regional Security Complex Theory (RSCT) advanced by Buzan & Wæver (2003). The work concludes that the RSCT, along with the concept of externality introduced in Lake (2001) and the inductively insights proposed by researchers like Ayoob (1989, 1995), allow a better understanding of the relationship between developing States, the region and the international system
