Resumo

The forced labor imposed to the Indian villages of Santafé and Tunja in order to supply firewood during the 16th and 17th centuries, has not been studying in Colombian historiography. Concomitant with the mobilization of coerced labor (alquiler general, concierto, mita), colonial authorities imposed the obligation of collect certain amount of wood that was used in daily necessities (like cooking and home heating) in the New Kingdom of Granada. This article describes the organization of indigenous labors, in order to supply the wood necessities, the difficulties that this imposition represented, and the effects in everyday activities that the wood mita had upon indigenous communities.
