GONZALEZ DEMURO, Wilson. Political Participation of River Plate Clergy in the Late Colonial Period. The Conflict between the Junta of Montevideo (1808-1809) and the City Vicar. Front. hist. [online]. 2016, vol.21, n.2, pp.132-155. ISSN 2027-4688.  https://doi.org/10.22380/2027468898.

The involvement of clerics in all public affairs was a natural and inevitable consequence of their importance in late colonial society. They were involved in different ways in the juntista Hispanic American movement between 1808 and 1810, and encouraged discussions on loyalty to the king, retroversion of sovereignty and the future of colonial territories. This paper proposes an approach to the phenomenon of political participation of Iberoamerican clergy at this critical juncture. The analysis focuses on the emergence of Government Junta in Montevideo (September 1808) and the role played by some ecclesiastical hierarchy.
