MARTINEZ-MARTIN, Abel Fernando  e  OTALORA-CASCANTE, Andrés Ricardo. The Noble and Gentle Heroin. The Centenary of La Pola, Tunja (1917). Historelo.rev.hist.reg.local [online]. 2020, vol.12, n.25, pp.117-147. ISSN 2145-132X.  https://doi.org/10.15446/historelo.v12n25.83180.

This article depicts the national holiday on the occasion of the centenary of the execution of the popular heroine Policarpa Salavarrieta, La Pola, as well as the celebrations held in Tunja (Colombia) in November 1917. This commemoration is part of the national holidays celebrated in the centennial decade (1910-1919) in the capital of Boyacá. Archives and libraries in Tunja and Bogotá, official publications of the National History Academy and the Tunja History Centre were consulted, as well as illustrated magazines, which allowed the analysis of images issued in honor of the heroin. The decade of the centennials had important implications for the urban development of the city; the centenary of La Pola was the second last national holiday before the centenary of Boyacá in 1919. Within the discourse of peace, progress, modernity, civilization, and unity, driven by the conservative government and the Catholic Church, through the National Academy of History and its regional branches, the image of the martyr is used as an example to imitate by the girls and young ladies of the Republic, within a pedagogical discourse that sought to integrate women into the project of Nation and Boyacense People.
