BINNS, NIALL. The Massacre of the Innocent: Cuban Women Intellectuals in Defense of Spanish Children. Anu. colomb. hist. soc. cult. [online]. 2011, vol.38, n.2, pp.83-110. ISSN 0120-2456.
The article studies the impact that the Spanish Civil War and, specifically, the images of children killed during the air raids on Madrid and other Republican cities had on seven Cuban women intellectuals. These images, disseminated by the press and cinema newsreels, recur obsessively in the writings of Mariblanca Sabas Alomá, Serafina Núñez, Berta Arocena, Mirta Aguirre, Fina García Marruz, Emma Pérez, and Teté Casuso. Following the prestigious example of Gabriela Mistral, these Cuban intellectuals appeal to their "maternal" sensibility in order to express their compassion and justify their indignation and political activism in defense of Spanish children.
