GARCIA LEON, David Leonardo. REFLECTIONS ON THE SOCIOLINGUISTIC SITUATION OF CARIBBEAN ENGLISH-BASED CREOLE LANGUAGES. Forma funcion, Santaf, de Bogot, D.C. [online]. 2014, vol.27, n.1, pp.199-232. ISSN 0120-338X.  https://doi.org/10.15446/fyf.v27n1.46952.

The article presents a series of reflections arising from a research project aimed at characterizing English-based Creole languages in the Caribbean, taking the social aspects of linguistic contact into account. The study was a qualitative one, with a descriptive-interpretive approach. The topics analyzed were the following: 1) the forms of emergence of the Creole languages studied; 2) the pertinence of terms such as post-creole linguistic continuum and diglossia; 3) the intra-linguistic variations in this type of vernacular languages; 4) the reasons why these languages prevail despite their relation of subordination to a European language, and 5) the role played by the reappearance of English in situations in which Creole usually coexists with Spanish. This article is expected to generate discussions in the fields of Creole studies, bilingualism, sociolinguistics, and language contact.

Palavras-chave : English Creole languages; Caribbean; language contact; diglossia; post-creole linguistic continuum; vitality and linguistic identity.
